An Afternoon on De Portola
Most Temecula maps are drawn around Rancho California Road. That’s where the buses go. De Portola runs a ridge to the south — same valley, different afternoon.
You don’t need a reservation for a normal-sized group at most of these, but hours are shorter than the big rooms on the main road, and two of them have rules that will wreck the day if you find out at the door.
A simple order, west to east if you’re coming off Anza / the roundabout:
Gershon Bachus Vintners — 37750 De Portola Road
Seated, unhurried reds. Kenny and Christina Falik hold wine 24 to 48 months in European oak before it sees a glass. The 2022 Reserve Syrah took Double Gold. There is no band and no food truck. Official policy asks you not to bring children; the Temecula Valley Winegrowers Association lists it as family-friendly — follow the winery, not the association. Call about dogs. Open roughly noon to 6 weekdays, 11 to 6 weekends; confirm seating time.
Frangipani Estate Winery — 39750 De Portola Road
The reliable one. Don and JoAnn Frangipani, here since 2003. Bold French- and Italian-leaning reds, an on-site grill (Oakey Grape Grill, about 11:30–5:30), dogs and kids welcome, open daily 10 to 6. If everything else on the trail is closed Monday, this is still pouring.
Masia de la Vinya — 40230 De Portola Road
Spanish in outlook — Tempranillo, a Barbera that took Silver — fruit-forward, built for food. Ken and Tina Smith. Live music every Saturday, food trucks roughly 12–5. Saturdays are 21-and-over. Dogs on the patio, service animals only inside. Outside food is welcome Sunday through Friday, but not on Saturday.
Palumbo Family Vineyards — 40150 Barksdale Circle
A short hop off De Portola. The smallest room in this note, and the one most obviously built for wine rather than events. Nick and Cindy Palumbo, son Reed on the vines. About 13 acres, about 2,500 cases, structured reds; Tre Fratelli is the Meritage-style blend people talk about. Friday–Monday 11–5, appointment Tuesday–Thursday. Outside food welcome. No regular kitchen. Dog policy is uncertain — TVWA doesn’t list them as dog-friendly; BringFido says they no longer are. Call.
If you only have two hours
Palumbo and Gershon Bachus. You will not get a party. You will get wine.
The four-winery list, with hours and the same source conflicts, is also on the De Portola filter view — this note is the order and the door policies, not a second directory.
Hours on this road move for harvest, private events, and family things. We check winery pages against the Winegrowers Association and note when they disagree. Still call.
